IASWCD Awards
- Supervisor of the Year due Oct. 15, 2010
Honors Soil and Water Conservation District leaders "supervisors" for their outstanding and exemplary achievements and leadership in the protection and enhancement of Indiana’s soil and water resources.
- Friend of Conservation Award - NEW! due Sept. 1, 2010
Recognizes individuals or entities who have made an outstanding contribution to soil and water conservation in Indiana.
- Conservation Farmer of the Year Award due Sept. 1, 2010
Honors Hoosier farmers who actively incorporate and practice conservation on the land.
Up to five Indiana farmers will be honored as the top conservation‐minded producers in the Hoosier state.
Larry Nieman, Decatur County, pictured here with his family, also was a 2009 Conservation Farmer of the Year. Over the past few years, Larry has expanded his no-till acreage significantly and has been pleased with the results, both in yields and reduction of soil erosion. He now uses no-till planting for all crops acres except those when swine manure is injected. Larry continues to explore ways to inject manure and still maintain high levels of crop residue on the soil surface.
- District Showcase Awards Application due July 16, 2010
Highlights the successes of four local Indiana Soil and Water Conservation
Districts (SWCDs).
Kosciusko County, one of the four 2008 District Showcase Award recipients, highlighted their partnership for the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), a federal initiative that provides a platform for the SWCD to build productive and enthusiastic conservation partnerships that benefit landowners. In Kosciusko County, CREP promotes the installation of conservation buffers and wetland restoration within the Tippecanoe River Watershed. Technical assistance is headquartered in Kosciusko County, but service also is provided to Fulton and Marshall Counties. Eligible practices under CREP are Native Grasses, Hardwood Trees, Wildlife Habitat, Grassed Filter Strip, Riparian Buffers, Wetland Restoration, and Bottomland Timber.
