2009 Stewardship Week Idea for Indiana SWCDs
The 2009 National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Stewardship theme is: “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil.” Stewardship Week will be officially celebrated April 26 to May 3, 2009. This year, the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (IASWCD) is challenging Districts to dig a hole and plant a tree during Stewardship Week in memory of NACD’s past president Olin Sims.
The Association will celebrate Stewardship Week 2009 by planting a tree and placing an Olin Sims Living Legacy Tree Planting Project Marker – purchased from NACD >> click here. The tree will be native to Indiana. Once we have details for the ceremony, we will let you know the date, location and time.
We would like to encourage all Districts who have not yet honored Olin Sims memory to do so this year during 2009 Stewardship Week by planting a tree in his memory. This can be a very public event to raise awareness of the important stewardship activities your SWCD conducts throughout the year. At the same time, you would draw attention to the critical role trees play in stabilizing the soil and keeping our water clean. It also would be an opportunity to pay tribute to a past NACD president who cared so deeply about the land. >>Click here for NACD’s Web page on Olin Sims legacy.
Your Olin Sims Living Legacy Tree could be planted on the grounds of your District office, in a city park, local church grounds, or a local government complex. NACD also would like you send photos of your tree planting to them (please identify participants) to Lisa Lerwick at lisa-lerwick@nacdnet.org.
Here is your checklist for a Stewardship Week Tree Planting Event:
- Schedule an event either during:
- Stewardship Week April 26 to May 3, or
- On Arbor Day April 24
- Order the Olin Sims Living Legacy Tree Planting Project Marker
- Select a site to plant your tree / obtain necessary permissions.
- Select a native tree appropriate to the soil type in your area.
- Promote how trees and their roots stabilize the soil and hold it in place, filtering nutrients and sediment from runoff before it reaches our rivers, lakes and streams.
- Promote the soil type in your county. The USDA NRCS Web Soil Survey allows users to find soils information for most locations in the United States. Visit the Web site at: http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/ for the Web Soil Survey. The site has three basic steps, which make Web Soil Survey (WSS) a simple way to access and analyze soil data.
- Schedule the ceremony. Invite supervisors including your chair, conservation partners, mayor, county council reps, commissioners, other dignitaries and MEDIA. Send out a media advisory ahead of schedule (>>click here for a sample media advisory template to use) and a news release afterwards with a photo to media who did not attend.
- Tie your tree planting ceremony to the efforts your SWCD does on a daily basis to protect soil and water resources in your county. Highlight some of the initiatives your District is involved in that protects soil and water resources in the agricultural and urban arenas. Don’t forget the partnerships your District may be involved in such as the Plant A Million project to increase the tree canopy cover in Central Indiana and help provide residents with the understanding of proper long-term stewardship of trees.
